Ask a Teacher: The Dominant Hand

Question:

I am working with my 5 yr old grandson. He can recognize most letters of the alphabet, but has great difficulty writing or even using crayons. He often alternates between the right and the left hand. How can we know whether he is dominate on one side or the other? Should we insist that he use the dominant side in most activities?

Answer:

It is pretty common for young children to use both hands. One way you can tell which side may be more dominant is by observing him. Which hand does he use more often when he uses a spoon or fork? Which hand does he use when he throws a ball? Brushes his teeth? You may be able to tell which side is more dominant by observing these kinds of activities.

Writing and coloring skills require more eye-hand coordination which will come with age and practice. Hope this helps!
