- Read the Newspaper: As you are reading the newspaper, pick out words that have the short vowel sounds and read them aloud to your child. Ask your child to tell you what vowel sound he or she hears.
- Alphabet Cookie Vowels: You can use this game with long vowel sounds as well. Give your child some alphabet cookies and ask him or her to take out the 5 vowels. Say a word with a short vowel sound and ask your child to hold up the cookie with the vowel sound that is heard. Once 5 words have been identified correctly with a short vowel, let your child eat the vowel. It’s fun and yummy too!
- Goodnight Moon: With your child, read the story Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. After reading each page, ask your child to point to pictures of things that have the short vowel sounds. Your child can say the word and tell you which vowel sound he or she hears. Your child’s favorite story will also work well in this activity.
