  • Paper Bag Letters: Gather pictures of animals or objects that begin with the letters in the box above, and place them in a paper bag. To add some fun, you can also have your child cut pictures out of magazines and put them in the bag. Ask your child to pick out a picture and tell you the initial consonant sound.
  • Sing the Letters: Make flash cards with the letters from the box above and lay them face up on the table or floor. Sing the following song to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”:

We are looking for a/an (name of letter),
For a/an (name of letter) today,
(Sing the sound of the letter to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”),
We’re looking for a/an (name of letter).

Ask your child to pick up the letter that has the sound you are singing in the song.

  • Supermarket Sweep: Pick a food at the supermarket and think of its initial sound. Say to your child, “I spy something that begins with the sound ____.” If your child guesses the correct word, then he or she gets to take a turn. For this activity, think of foods that start with H, P, L, C, T and M. Here are some words to get you started: horseradish, ham, peaches, plums, lollipops, lemons, carrots, corn, tomatoes, tortillas, mangos, melons, mustard.
