Visual discrimination skills will help your child compare and contrast visual images and, as a result, help him or her become a better reader! Use the tips below to help your child reinforce these skills.
- Be a Shape Detective: Draw shapes on index cards and place them in a basket. Include squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, ovals, stars, diamonds and hexagons. Be sure to draw each shape twice. Have your child take out two shapes from the basket and identify the shapes. Ask him or her to tell you if they are the same. If they are not, ask your child to continue to select shapes from the basket until finding a match. Once a match is found, remove those cards from the game.
- Shape Scavenger Hunt: Show your child a picture of an object, and ask your child to identify which shape he or she sees. Here are some examples: ball = circle, kite = diamond, table = square, egg = oval. Next, ask your child to look around the house to identify objects that are shapes. For example, clock = circle, pillow = rectangle, CD case = square.
- Draw the Letter: Draw a letter for your child and ask your child to copy the letter. You can also draw a letter that is partially complete, and ask your child to finish the letter.
