Tips for Practicing Letter Sequencing

The following information is from a series of parent tips by Knowledge Adventure. The tips are meant to be used as fun ways of bringing learning into the home and everyday life. We hope you enjoy them!

Has your child learned how to put letters into alphabetical order in school? If so, the fun, useful tips below will help them practice putting both the uppercase and lowercase letters in ABC order at home.

  • Alphabet Magnets: Give your child uppercase alphabet magnets. Ask your child to put them in ABC order. Note: you may want to break the alphabet into groups of 8 to simplify this for younger learners.
  • Before or After: Use a set of alphabet cards. Include only the lowercase letters. Turn over a letter and ask your child to tell you, as quickly as possible, which letter comes before and after it. You might want to use a stopwatch and make it into a fun game! If your child is having a difficult time, use an alphabet strip to help.
  • Identify the Missing Letter: Lay out a set of alphabet cards in alphabetical order. Be sure to use only the uppercase or only the lowercase letters for this activity. Ask your child to close his or her eyes. Then take one card away. Have your child open his or her eyes and tell you which letter is missing. You can start to take away more than one card at a time as your child’s skill improves.

Encourage your child to sing the ABC’s to help!
