Use the tips below to help your child identify irregular vowels in pictures and words. Focus on the two sounds in the table below. Here are some words to help you get started:

-
Book Mania: Have your child look through books to find words that contain the irregular vowels above. Ask your child to read the word and tell you which of the two irregular vowels he or she hears.
-
Word Sort: Look through magazines to find words that have the two irregular vowel sounds above. Have your child cut out the words he or she finds. Take a piece of construction paper and draw a line down the middle. Write “oo as in food” on one side and “oo as in foot” on the other. Separate the words according to the irregular vowel sound and glue them in the appropriate place. You can also look for pictures to match and add them to your project.
-
Word Charades: Write the words from the box above on small pieces of paper and put them in a hat. Have your child pull a word from the hat and act out the word, while you try to guess the word being performed. Take turns with your child until all of the words have been guessed. Talk about the vowel sound you hear in each word.
