Kisha’s Craft Corner: Beautiful Butterflies

If you’re like me, coffee brightens up your mornings. But now, with a little paint and some craftiness, those coffee filters can be used to brighten up your kitchen as well – in the form of beautiful butterflies!

A butterfly that won't flutter away!

What you’ll need:

  • 1 coffee filter
  • 1 wooden clothespin
  • 1 set of watercolor paints
  • 1 pipe cleaner
  • 1 set of googly eyes
  • glitter (optional)
  • ribbon (optional)
  • magnets (optional)

What to do:

  • Tip! Start by covering your table with a plastic bag – the paint tends to get a little dribbly.
  • Smooth your coffee filter out into a nice, flat circle. Using your fingers and some water, help your child smear paint across the filter. Don’t be afraid to let the colors run, drip and splat – your masterpiece will take on a stained glass window type look.

  • Once you are happy with your painting, let the coffee filter dry for about 20 minutes. Is your little one feeling impatient? To speed up the drying, try using a hairdryer.
  • In the meantime, stick two googly eyes on your clothespin. You’ll want these on the clamping end of the pin. Need some extra sparkle? Smear glue down the front of the clothespin, and gently sprinkle on a thin layer of glitter.
  • Next scrunch the filter from 2 opposite ends of the circle, and clamp inside your clothespin. Adjust the filter to make sure your colors are showing in beautiful, full wings.
  • Finally, take your pipe cleaner and twist it into some kooky antennae. Clamp this inside the tip-top of the clothespin as well. Tada! You now have a beautiful butterfly that won’t ever flit away!

Variation – Picture Display:

  • To transform your butterfly into a picture holder, simply attach a magnet to the back of your clothespin (opposite the eyes).
  • Glue or tape a ribbon to the back of the clothespin so that it can dangle straight down.
  • Tape the other end of the ribbon to the back of a favorite photo, stick your butterfly to the fridge, and voila – a springy new way to show off your family pictures.
