Mad Scientist

I hope you are in the mood for fun, because we have a super slimy science project that your kids will LOVE!  Experimentation is a great teaching method that allows children to actively learn and realize the importance of following ordered instructions. Science stimulates children’s natural curiosity and teaches them different ways to better understand the world around them.  So with all those educational benefits in mind, let’s make some sludge! Please note: Alien Sludge is lots of fun, but not for eating! Make sure your child does not ingest the Sludge.

Alien Sludge

What you need:

  • 2 cups white glue
  • 1½ cups water at room temperature
  • Food coloring- Any color (We recommend Alien Green!)
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2½ Tbsp 20 Mule Team Borax
  1. Mix the glue, room temperature water and a few drops of food coloring in a medium sized bowl.
  2. In a larger bowl, mix together the hot water and borax. Stir until the borax is dissolved.
  3. Stir the glue mixture into the borax. Make sure you or your child is constantly stirring as you pour in the mix. There may be some excess water that needs to be poured off. No worries…this is completely normal!
  4. Play with the Sludge and have a fantastic time!

  1. [...] of great ideas for projects and recipes to do with your children! I really love the Mad Scientist Invisible Ink recipe they just posted. While you’re at it they have tons of great videos on the JumpStart YouTube [...]

  2. You KNOW the kids will totally ♥ the invisible ink!

I always wonder where to buy the borax tho? In reg. grocery store??

    • Hi there!

We’re glad you liked the article! Department stores like Wal-Mart or Target sometimes carry borax in the laundry section. If they don’t have it in stock, they can usually order it for you. Also, this site suggests that Ace hardware stores carry it, so that would be a good place to look if there are Ace stores in your area. Happy experimenting!

      • FYI, in Canada Mule Team Borax is available in most grocery stores in the laundry section- as people use it as a laundry booster – it’s about $5-6.00 a box although the box looks different then the one above, it’s light grean with a picture on it. hth Wendy

  3. Love this for the kids I work with! Thanks.

  4. Hi,
Children found it very entertaing experiment. Indeed we look forwaed to more such experiments. In this way children’s interest in science and knowledge increase.
    Thanks,
    Ovais Jafri

  5. loved the experiment! Worked great! found the borax in Walmart laundry area.

    Thanks

  6. We have made this before. My son loved it. I need to make another batch. But a much bigger batch than before. : )

  7. It is great to play with, although you have to be careful, the borax is toxic and also, if it gets in hair, it is really hard to get out, my daughter has long hair and decided to make a hat, took us hours to get it out, almost had to cut her hair. Just a warning.

  8. hi ryan maybe your jummpez can fly a kite or a remote control airplane maybe at the genral goood store their could be a rocket that your jummpez can shot it into midair
