Ping Pong Ball Fun

Stormy days can really stifle summer plans, but you don’t have to let Mother Nature rain on your parade. These ping pong ball games are guaranteed fun in any weather!

Ping pong ball air hockey

You will need:

  • A card table
  • A ping pong ball
  • 2 or more players
  1. If there are only two players, place players on opposite sides of the card table. If there are four players, assign each player to one side of the table. If there are more than four players, split them into teams and assign each team one side of the table.
  2. Place the ping pong ball in the middle of the table and decide on a time period for the game.
  3. No one may touch the ball or push the table. Instead, they have to move the ball by blowing on it.
  4. Each player or team gets a point when the ball falls off their assigned side of the table.
  5. Whichever player or team has the fewest points at the end of the time period wins!
  6. If you’re using the game for a party or other large group of kids, consider adding more ping pong balls to the table for extra fun! If you add more balls, you may have to suspend score-keeping to preserve your sanity.

Target practice

You will need:

  • Ping pong balls
  • Targets: empty frozen juice cans, plastic cups, boxes, cardboard packing tubes, paper bags, etc.
  • Paper towels
  1. Stuff a couple of layers of paper towel into the bottom of each target to keep the ping pong balls from bouncing out.
  2. Set the targets up around the room in any configuration you’d like.
  3. Let your child try to get the ping pong ball into the targets with no bounces, one bounce, or more than one bounce.
  4. For an added twist, have your child try to get the ball in the target by bouncing the ball on the floor and then hitting it with a ping pong paddle.

Obstacle course

You will need:

  • A ping pong ball
  • Masking tape
  • A paper towel roll tube or straw
  • Cardboard packing tubes, books, etc., to use as obstacles (optional)
  1. Use the masking tape to create a track on the floor. For older children, try making fun turns and mixing different kinds of flooring (carpet, hardwood, etc.).
  2. If you’d like, create obstacles. Books can be used to make ramps, and cardboard packing tubes are great for tunnels (as long as the tunnels aren’t too long, or the ball will never make it through).
  3. Have your child blow through the paper towel roll or straw to push the ping pong ball through the maze. If more than one child is playing, they can work as a team or race against each other!
