Fire Eating Isn’t Just for the Circus: Make an Edible Campfire!

We all know it’s dangerous to play with fire…unless it’s delicious, that is! Use this fun activity to teach your child about fire safety and how to build a campfire. That knowledge will come in handy on your next camping trip!

You will need:

  • Safety circle (paper plate)
  • Fire circle (mini marshmallows, M&Ms, jelly beans, or Cheerios)
  • Tinder (shredded coconut or potato sticks)
  • Kindling (pretzel sticks)
  • Fuel (Tootsie Rolls, pretzel logs, or cheese puffs)
  • Match (toothpick or pretzel stick)
  • Sparks/small fire (Red Hots or red licorice)
  • Larger flames (candy corn)
  • Water bucket (cup of water or juice)

Build your fire:

  1. Put the paper plate on the table in front of you. This is the safety circle, where no one should run or play while there is a fire.
  2. Build a fire circle with stones (marshmallows, candy, or cereal).
  3. Create an A or V shape with the logs (Tootsie Rolls, pretzel logs, or cheese puffs).
  4. Make a teepee out of the tinder (coconut or potato sticks) inside the A or V shape.
  5. Use the match (toothpick or pretzel stick) to light the fire.
  6. Add Red Hots or red licorice to the fire to represent sparks.
  7. Add kindling (pretzel sticks) to help the fire grow. Use candy corn to represent large flames.
  8. Normally, you would use the water bucket to extinguish the fire when you were done with it. In this case, you can just use your water or juice to wash down the delicious campfire you’ve made!
